Atlantis Revisited

Written by Robert Rhodes on Tuesday, August 30, 2005 in: Main |

My prayers go out for all those affected by Hurricane Katrina.

Having said that…

Fox News was reporting – before Katrina made landfall – from New Orleans. One man was interviewed and asked if he’d be leaving. His response was something like “Why the F* would I want to leave?”

In all fairness, the reporter a) shouldn’t have asked that question on live TV, and b) shouldn’t have asked a redneck when he was drinking in a bar. Duh.

But that attitude, and the attitude of others that basically said “We’ve heard this before. [The weather forecasters] cry ‘wolf,’ and we go running. Nothing happens, and we lose money because we closed our businesses. Not this time.”

Then the forecasters came on Fox News and said “This isn’t like last time. This is Katrina. Folks need to evacuate.”

Most did. The rest stayed.

Now they’re asking for help.

I find the whole thing a little annoying. It’s not as though these folks weren’t told to leave.

Now I’m just waiting for the liberal left [both Democrats and the media] to blame the whole thing on Pres. Bush..

I Would Gladly Pay You Tuesday…

Written by Robert Rhodes on Tuesday, August 23, 2005 in: Main |

How many people can finish that line? How many people know what character kept saying that line?

Wimpy. Right out of the Popeye comic. (J. Wellington Wimpy, according to www.popeye-n-olive.com.)

Wimpy was expecting a free meal because… well… no reason at all. Just because he’d promise to “gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today.” A lazy, cowardly, selfish moocher.

Welcome to the day of tomorrow.

On our continuing quest to sign up new hotels to Aloha brand, cold calls continue to go out to independent hotels across the mainland. Currently, that means Alaska.

But a hotel called us from one of the promotional letters we sent out. A hotel from the state of Washington. The owner was interested, wanted more information, and a quote for fees. They, in turn, would talk to the other owner [a husband and wife team, from what I could tell], and get back to us.

And so they did get back to us. Seems that they love our service, but would prefer not to pay us. Instead, we bring in the guests, and they’ll pay us later based on our work.

What?

I’m a little confused. You hire a person to do a job, you may want them to do well. You may insist that their future at the company requires them to do well. But you can’t hire a person, and then if they don’t work out as well as you’d liked, you remove them, and never pay them. There are laws against that sort of thing.

So anyway…. at the time we said “we’ll think about it and get back to you.” Having thought about it, we’ll get back to them, but it’ll simply be “do you want to sign or not” question. We cannot just change the nature of the business because someone wants us too.

Sorry Wimpy. No free hamburgers today. In fact.. it is Tuesday.

Stitch… you know da kine, eh?

Lilo and Stich 2: Stitch has a Glitch… the local paper reports on Disney’s official release over at Turtle Bay Resort.

I gotta get the email address of Chris Sanders [voice and creator of Stitch]. Let him know how fantastic I think the show and characters are, and how his crew has managed to stay at possibly the worst managed resort in the Hawaiian islands.

I digress. Check out Star Bulletin’s site and read the articles yourself.

The only question I’m left with after reading the articles is… “Leroy and Stitch?”

Lost in Waikiki

Written by Robert Rhodes on Sunday, August 14, 2005 in: Main |

Last Friday (Aug 12 2005) at 5PM HST, I went [as usual] to the beach to visit with friends and get in a little pepper with the volleyball. (I think that’s fancy talk for “warming up.”)

But there on the beach was a complete film crew and setup. I’d seen a few of these guys about a week ago, when they visited the beach. I heard one of them say, when he was on the phone walking by me, something about shooting down at the beach.

With NBC’s “Hawaii” and FOX’s “North Shore” both cancelled, the only show I could think of was “Lost.” (Which I thought was unusual, considering that they film the show on Oahu’s North Shore, waaaaay off the beaten track. That’s what gives “Lost” it’s look and feel. But now they’re on the completely opposite end of the island?)

Welcome… Who are you?

Written by Robert Rhodes on Saturday, August 13, 2005 in: Main |

In July of 1996, the web was still in it’s infancy. (Well, compared to today’s webbed world, anyway.)

I typed up a little “about me” spot, and posted it on my little virtual island of land that I had at the time.

Word came down the pipe that posting websites with your personal photos, favorite links, and other favorite personal stuff wasa big no-no. I did it anyway, but tried to keep it somewhat professional.

I left out daily routines, and mentioned only major instances I could remember. This I did for eight years.

Welcome to 2005.

And instead of being called a biography… which is still is… now it’s a blog.

A what?

What didn’t even have a name in ‘96 is now called a weblog.

So, I figured, since I’d been keeping a blog for the last eight years… why not make it official for the ninth?

And here we are.

Will I post daily? Dunno. I’d like to try and post more often than once a year.

What’s the advantage to posting in a blog? My friends and family get to participate, if they so desire.

Now, that should make it interesting.
