Lost in Waikiki

Last Friday (Aug 12 2005) at 5PM HST, I went [as usual] to the beach to visit with friends and get in a little pepper with the volleyball. (I think that’s fancy talk for “warming up.”)

But there on the beach was a complete film crew and setup. I’d seen a few of these guys about a week ago, when they visited the beach. I heard one of them say, when he was on the phone walking by me, something about shooting down at the beach.

With NBC’s “Hawaii” and FOX’s “North Shore” both cancelled, the only show I could think of was “Lost.” (Which I thought was unusual, considering that they film the show on Oahu’s North Shore, waaaaay off the beaten track. That’s what gives “Lost” it’s look and feel. But now they’re on the completely opposite end of the island?)

Sure enough, here they were, camera crew, extras, a couple of stars.. the whole thing. I’m not a big tv watcher, and haven’t seen “Lost,” but what I was told by those that tune in is that they were filming a flashback.

Two guys on a bench. One cleaner-cut fellow says something about “keeping the eye on the ball.” This was supposed to be a scene from California? or Florida? But nope. Just more Hollyweird magic. But, if they keep it in the scene.. the cup of Starbucks coffee was quite real.

I’ve included a couple of photos [below] that I snapped off with my camera before one of the crew sent me silent “no cameras” with his hands. But, hey, you film on a public beach, expect cameras. The two guys on the bench? The first one is already on the bench in the first shot, and the second guy is behind the boom microphone in the second shot.

Enjoy.
