Review: The Brothers Grimm

Tuesday, December 27th, 2005

My Ranking: 4 out of 5.

Terry Gilliam brings to life another world of fantasy: The Brothers Grimm.

I like most any film that this Monty Python man brings to life. Some, more than others. This one is likeable, fun, and worth renting.

It doesn’t take itself too seriously, but does bring to life a world that only previously existed in the mind of Gilliam.

If you want some serious drama, or are expecting this film to be all about the stories from Grimm Fairytales… then this isn’t your movie.

However, I found it fun to catch all the various instances of those fairytales placed within the movie. Red Riding Hood. Hansel and Gretel. Rapunzel. Sleeping Beauty. Others spread throughout the movie.

Like the original Grimm Fairytales, I recommend this movie to an older audience because of the subject matter. For those that are thinking about Disney styled versions of these tales, I recommend you revisit the original Grimm tales that the Disney movies were based upon. If you’ve never read them, you’ll find them to be a bit more gritty than the Disney-ized versions you’re familiar with.

Mele Kalikimaka!

Sunday, December 18th, 2005

It’s the Christmas season once again. And for the first time in over two years, I’m taking a vacation trip back to Dallas, Texas to visit friends and family.

As a result, postings here at Aloha Daze may be more rare than usual.

As we say in Hawaii, Mele Kalikimaka! (Merry Christmas, to everyone else.)

Ol’ Whiney Butt Saddam

Wednesday, December 7th, 2005

From the Associated Press in regards to Saddam’s trial on Tuesday:

“An angry Saddam threatened at the end of the Tuesday court session to boycott the next day’s proceedings after complaining that he and the seven other co-defendants had been mistreated by the ‘unjust court.’”

“At the end of the Tuesday session, the judges agreed over defense objections to meet again the following day. Saddam shouted that ‘I will not come to an unjust court! Go to hell!’”

“Saddam, dressed again in a dark suit and white shirt and clutching a Quran, complained that he and the seven other defendants were tired and had been deprived of opportunities to shower, have a change of clothes, exercise or go for a smoke.

“‘This is terrorism,’ he declared.”

Here it is Wednesday. Also from the AP:

“Saddam Hussein’s trial was delayed Wednesday after the ousted president refused to attend the session, court officials said. Defense lawyers huddled with the judges in hopes of resolving the latest test of wills in the often-unruly trial.”

The court seems at a loss. Let me help:

Take control.

I’m so sorry that ol’ Saddam doesn’t have his daily back massage, personal whipping boy, money, and/or power anymore. But, the heck with him. The man is trash. Human waste. He murdered. He didn’t care.

Now he’s out of power. But he’s still acting like he owns the place. He’s trying to turn his court case into a kangaroo court.

This whiney butt, cry-baby attitude of “I don’t wanna come here anymore! I can’t get time for a smoke! I can’t put you to death like all of the other people that used to oppose me! WAH! It’s not fair!” is actually rather amusing. Or fitting. Or ironic.

My point is that Saddam doesn’t get to choose anymore. Leave him in his cell. Drag his butt to court. The court needs to take control NOW.

Saddam’s time of being in charge is gone. It’s high time he realized it.

The Pope is Back

Sunday, December 4th, 2005

Recently I posted about the oncoming doom of ABC’s Pope John Paul II.

I didn’t realize that CBS had their own version. Called Pope John Paul II [with a subtitle that simply reads "Based On The Powerful True Story"], this MOW stars Jon Voight as the Pope.

The same Jon Voight that played Noah in Hallmark’s disaster-of-a-movie Noah’s Ark.

The same Jon Voight that played a male prostitute in “Midnight Cowboy.”

Form your own opinion.
