How Canada Wants To Win Friends
The Vietnam War is already a sensitive issue with just about anybody that was involved with it, no matter the level of their involvement.
Those that burned their draft cards are probably on the short list for being singled out. Perhaps those that chose to burn their cards, and run off to Canada, have a different opinion of things today. Perhaps not.
But bringing up the issue is not unlike putting salt in an open wound.
Then there is Canada.
In 2004 a little town decided it would be a good idea to make a monument to the draft-dodgers. The monument would be a “larger-than-life monument depicting a Canadian helping two scared American men.” This idea was “quickly dropped after it was denounced by the U.S. Veterans of Foreign Wars and conservative media commentators.” That, and the town that was going to host the monument decided they’d like to keep their tourism money flowing, so they pulled support.
