Do As We Say, Not As We Do

Well now, ain’t that just perfect.

After much bipartisan political poo about nothing, Dubai Ports World decided to pull out of the agreement. This made Republicans and Democrats happy. (Although the Dems would have been happier had they blocked the deal all by themselves, but I digress.)

President Bush said:

“I’m concerned about a broader message this issue could send to our friends and allies around the world, particularly in the Middle East,” Bush said in remarks to the National Newspaper Association. “In order to win the War on Terror, we have got to strengthen our relationships and friendships with moderate, Arab countries in the Midddle East. UAE is a committed ally in the War on terror, they are a key partner for our military in a critical region.”

Yet bipartisan pinheads have managed to kill the deal.

In my previous post, I suggested that we need to examine the deal more closely. (The Senate later voted to ignore GOP requests to wait until a 45-day review of the deal is completed before they try to stop it.)

And while I had my reservations about the deal, I’m certain I didn’t want to kill it, and then alienate the United Arab Emirates… which is effectively what has just happened.

This has basically been a test of the United States. Embarrasingly enough, it looks as though we’ve failed it.

To basically say, “I don’t want that Arab company to manage the ports… but it’s not racially motivated. It’s not because they’re Arabs.” But then, it is. Because there isn’t any other good reason other than that.

And now this:

Members of Dubai’s royal family were said to be furious on Thursday over U.S. plans to reject their bid to operate terminals at U.S. ports - and they’re threatening to cancel American business deals and perhaps even boot U.S. military forces from strategic bases in the UAE.

Well, gee, I didn’t see that coming.

In a time when Republicans should have stepped up to the plate and backed their President, they instead backed off, took the easy road, and distanced themselves… because it’s election year and, hey, you can’t be seen with a President that actually makes solid decisions. Better to disagree in hopes of getting re-elected.

Don’t worry about who you insult. Or embarrass.

US Senators Fail US Ally, UAE…

However, the UAE cut all ties of support with the Taliban after Sept. 11, 2001. The message was clear: the UAE condemned the terrorist attack on the US and would work to support the war on terror….
