According to a live interview with a General in Iraq (I’m not sure if it was Caldwell or Casey?) — Zarqawi was alive when forces arrived on scene, and even tried to roll off of the stretcher when he realized that it was the United States Forces that had dropped a couple of 500 pound bombs on his terrorist butt from an F-16.
